Mendelssohn diceva che i pensieri musicali non sono troppo vaghi, ma troppo precisi per essere espressi a parole. Tali sono anche i Pensieri di Andrea Menafra: soliloqui affilati e lucidi in cui non c'è spazio per banalità e luoghi comuni, frutto di una concezione discorsiva del jazz come lingua musicale per eccellenza. Pensieri carichi di storia, testimoni di un'esperienza di ascolto ad ampio raggio e di una sensibilità personale asciutta e vigile. La musica di Andrea Menafra è una danza del pensiero nutrita di finezze e geometrie, un prisma che filtra l'emozione depurandola dalle scorie del sentimentale e dell'ovvio. Una musica che affronta la sfida del vuoto senza nasconderlo con l'enfasi e la moltiplicazione degli effetti, trasformandolo in spazio aperto per l'immaginazione: accompagnamenti a melodie che non ci sono (Pensieri nn. 1 e 7), colonne sonore per immagini possibili (n. 5), interrogativi senza risposta (n. 6). E, ancora, echi lontani e suggestivi di musiche altre : la musica contemporanea, di cui Andrea è esperto cultore (n. 11), il jazz-rock, sintetizzato in un incisivo ostinato ritmico di due note (n. 10), il pensoso lirismo iberico alla Albeniz (n. 2). Tracce, riflessi che arricchiscono un linguaggio sofisticato eppure naturale, evoluto ma sempre comprensibile. Thoughts è un disco da ascoltare e riascoltare, assaporando il dipanarsi dei pensieri, lo snodarsi di quell'avventura erratica e rigorosa che è l'improvvisazione jazz ad alto livello: un disco che parla al cuore attraverso lo spirito.

Mendelssohn said that musical thoughts are never too vague, but rather too precise to be expressed in words. This is also true of Thoughts by Andrea Menafra: subtle, clear soliloquies in which there is no room for banality or the commonplace; the fruit of a discursive concept of jazz as the musical language par excellence. These thoughts are full of history, bearing witness to a wide range of listening experience and a sharp, watchful personal sensibility. The music of Andrea Menafra is a dance of thought nourished by finesse and geometries, a prism that filters emotion, cleansing it of the dross of the sentimental or the obvious. It is music that takes on the challenge of the void without hiding it under emphasis or the multiplication of effects, transforming it into a space open to the imagination: accompaniment to melodies that are not there (Thoughts nos. 1 and 7), soundtracks for possible images (no. 5), questions without answers (no. 6). And again, faraway echoes reminiscent of other music : contemporary music, which Andrea is an expert in (no. 11), jazz-rock, synthesized in an incisive, rhythmic ostinato of two notes (no. 10), the pensive lyricism of Albeniz (no. 2). Traces, reflections that enrich a sophisticated, yet natural language that is modern yet always comprehensible. Thoughts is a cd to listen to again and again, savouring its unravelling of thoughts, the unwinding of that erratic, rigorous adventure that high-level jazz is: it is a cd that speaks to the heart through the spirit.
